Published on May 26th, 2020 by Enrichmond Foundation
Today we are sharing Mr. Alexander “Al” Smith’s story of his service in the U.S. Army as well as the Virginia National Guard. He is a member of the advisory ExPRT team for Historic Evergreen Cemetery and frequently volunteers the services of his tractor to help with work onsite. Thank you to Al and all veterans for your service!
From Al:
When I graduated from High School in the Spring of 1965, I had no idea what I wanted to do in life. So, I volunteered for the U.S. Army and entered the service in January 1966. I was trained and served as a Helicopter Crew Chief and was honorably discharged in January 1969. Most of my service time was spent in Germany. I will always treasure and credit my time and experience in the service as a positive turning point in my life. It set me on the right course and in September of 1969 I came to Richmond and started attending Virginia Union University on the G.I. Bill. I graduated in 1973 with a B.S in Business Administration and began a rewarding 37 year career with Dominion Energy. During my career with Dominion I also served 8 years in the Virginia National Guard. I am a member of American Legion Post 186 in Midlothian, Virginia and it’s so very pleasing and satisfying whenever we can honor the countless men and women who have given their all to keep our Nation free.
