Pump House Tour & “Stories of an Abandoned Virginia”

June 14th, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:15 pm

Pump House Tour & “Stories of an Abandoned Virginia”

Located on the North Bank of the James River, the multi-use Pump House was constructed on the same site as the first canal lock system in the U.S. The downstairs was a public-use pumping station and the upstairs was a venue used for lavish events and dances until the mid-1920’s. A revitalized Pump House would be the crown jewel of the City of Richmond’s already stellar park system. However, the building needs significant repairs in order to become ADA-compliant and to earn a Certificate of Occupancy. These repairs include, but are not limited to, water and sewer hookups, major roof repairs and the installation of an outside elevator. Through your donations, our community can revitalize the Pump House to its former glory. Can you imagine?

As part of our fundraising efforts, we have partnered with author, photographer and professional storyteller, John Plashal. 140 lucky and generous guests will have a unique opportunity on certain Friday evenings this summer to not only receive a personal tour of the inside of this architectural gem but to enjoy an additional highly visual presentation about Virginia’s “abandoned afterworld”. Plashal has not only spent many years identifying and photographing beautifully decaying houses, churches, schools, hospitals and other structures throughout our state but has assimilated into their respective communities to learn about their accompanying backstories. The result is “Stories of an Abandoned Virginia”, a unique presentation full of powerful imagery and emotional stories revolving around local landmarks that have been “frozen in time” and the accompanying Virginians that once occupied them, delivered from the unique setting of INSIDE this beautifully abandoned architectural wonder.

This event is sure to entertain and educate our fellow Virginians while simultaneously raising money towards the revitalization of this historically significant structure. Proceeds will be donated to Friends of the Pump House.

This will be the first of seven “Pump House Tours & Stories of an Abandoned Virginia” programs to take place this summer, all of which will be on Friday nights.

Each event is limited to 20 people.

Hardhats will be provided and are required during your visit.

Admission begins at 6:15PM. The tour begins at 6:30PM. Plashal’s storytelling begins at 7PM.
