Mayor’s Annual Centenarian Celebration

Older adults represent the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are rapidly entering their retirement years, of which many are caregivers for aging relatives. By 2030, the number of people in our region age 65 and over will double; and those 85 and over will more than triple. Source: Virginia Employment Commission, 2010

Over the next 20 years, Greater Richmond’s demographic landscape will continue to change dramatically, and the number of older adults age 60 and over will outnumber school-aged children for the first time in history. Due to advances in medicine and healthcare, the number of Centenarians will continue to rise to unprecedented levels; thereby generating a need for programs and services to meet their growing needs. To support this growth, the City of Richmond is committed to strengthening programs and services for this population and advance awareness of a nationwide age wave.
